History of ASCE

The American Society of Civil Engineers was initially known as the American Society for Civil Engineers and Architects when it was established on 5th November 1852. A dozen civil engineers gathered in New York and the society was formed in the office of Alfred w. Craven, the chief engineer. In 1868, architects established their own society and civil engineers now had a separate society which was renamed soon. Since its establishment, ASCE had a headquarters in the city of New York but it finally shifted outside New York to Reston, Virginia.
