What does ASHA mean?

Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) is a woman appointed as a community health worker by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW). The eligible ASHA women are given proper health care training to spread awareness about government schemes on health care for villages and communities.

The ASHA mission is a part of the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM). ASHA health care mission was launched in 2005, and its target is to provide an ASHA worker in every village of India. What are the tasks of ASHA workers?

Eligibility required for ASHA workers

• The women must be a high-secondary pass out.
• The age limit for ASHA workers is between 25-45 years. 
• The woman must be a permanent resident of that village.
• Gram panchayat of the village is entitled to propose the suitable lady as an ASHA worker. Widows and Married women are given preferences.
