What does EWS mean?

Early Warning System (EWS), as its name suggests, is a system built to warn people about any potential disaster due to climate change. An EWS is communicated through integrated systems to help residents living in a particular area prepare for the likely disaster anticipated.

An efficient EWS would consist of 4 elements,

• Dissemination and communication
• Response capability

So here, the system is divided majorly into two functions; data gathering and data reporting. The risk analysis and monitoring elements fall in the former, while communication and response capability in the latter. Data is gathered through modern technology aided by smart infrastructure and communicated through receiving devices such as billboards, sirens, radio, SMS, etc.

The UN’s project in implementing EWS has allegedly helped multiple under-developed countries across Asia, Africa and South America. An EWS can be classified by the type of hazard it redicts, the level at which it predicts the disaster, where it predicts the disaster (on land, water or space), and whether the disaster it predicts is singular or multiple.
