What does FHC mean?

FHC is the initials of the Brazilian sociologist, politician and professor, Fernando Henrique Cardoso. Fernando served as the 34th President of Brazil from 1st January 1995 to 31st December 2002. Fernando became the first president in Brazil to be re-elected for his post.

Fernando has won several honors such as the Kluge Prize from the United States Library of Congress in 2012 and the Prince of Asturias Award for International Cooperation in the year 2000. Cardoso was also elected as the 10th president of the International Sociological Association serving from 1982 to 1986.

Early and Personal Life

Cardoso was born on 18th June 1931 in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He belonged to a family of wealthy Portuguese immigrants. He lived in Sao Paulo for the majority part of his life. He completed his education as a Sociologist and became a professor for sociology and political science at the University of Sao Paulo.

He was married to Ruth Cardoso in 1953 who was an anthropologist. He received the most senior level of academic recognition in Brazil, the Livre-Docencia degree in 1963. He also claimed the title of Cathedratic Professor and held the position of professor of Political Science at the University of Sao Paulo.

Presidency of FHC

Cardoso was elected the President of Brazil with the support of his own party – Social Democratic Party along with two other parties – the Liberal Front Party and the Brazilian Labour Party.

Under his rule, human rights advancements were noticed characterized by the establishment of a national secretariat and a program for discussing civil society. He became the first President of the country to address the huge gap between the rich and poor and began specialized programs for improving the inequality in the country.
