History

The International Basketball Federation was originally established as Fédération Internationale de basket-ball amateur on 

18 June 1932. International Amateur Handball Federation was the governing body for the sport of basketball prior to the establishment of the International Basketball Federation.

The national basketball federations of Argentina, Czechoslovakia, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Portugal, Romania and Switzerland were the first member federations to constitute the International Basketball Federation following its establishment.

Originally established in Geneva, Switzerland, the International Basketball Federation was headquartered in Geneva. The FIBA Headquarters were moved to Munich, Germany and then back again to Geneva. The current headquarters of the International Basketball Federation, established in 2013, is Mies, Switzerland.

Members

The International Basketball Federation is constituted of a total of 213 national-level basketball federations from around the world. The International Basketball Federation has categorized the member basketball federations on the basis of their geographical region into five zones which are: Oceania, Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas.

Among the members of the International Basketball Federation, the United States of America leads the international rankings in Basketball in the men’s category, followed by Spain and Australia. The international rankings in the women category are also led by the United States of America followed by Spain and Australia.
