The Microsoft Disk Operating System was the primary operations system for computers in the 1980s.

History

Microsoft Disk Operating System (MS-DOS) can be traced back to the 86 DOS, another Disk Operating System. The proprietorship of 86 DOS belonged to Seattle Computer Products.

Microsoft purchased the proprietorship of 86 DOS (Disk Operating System) in 1981, and also hired the original developer of the 86 DOS (Disk Operating System), Tim Paterson. 86 DOS was later renamed to Microsoft Disk Operating System (MS-DOS).

Microsoft Disk Operating System served its commercial purpose as it was later used by multiple PC (Personal Computer) manufacturing companies as their Operating System. One of the most popular users of Microsoft Disk Operating System for their Personal Computer (PC) devices is IBM. Microsoft Disk Operating System (MS-DOS) was the primary choice for different IBM PC devices.

The Microsoft Disk Operating System (MS-DOS) went through multiple changes according to the relevant needs and multiple variants of the Microsoft Disk Operating System were launched with changes in technical specifications such as the MS-DOS 1 series, MS-DOS 2 series, and MS-DOS 3 series, etc.

Microsoft made the code of some versions of the Microsoft Disk Operating System as “source available” in 2014. Source available software is different from open-source software. However, Microsoft eventually made the code a free software in 2018.

Decline

The decline of the Microsoft Disk Operating System as an operating system in the market is directly related to the rising popularity of GUI integrated Operating Systems.

GUI refers to the Graphical User Interface. A Graphical User Interface allows the users to interact and operate computers and other digital devices with the help of graphical elements such as icons.

Operating systems began integrating Graphical User Interface (GUI) which made the user experience easier and more effective as opposed to the Command Line interface used in the Microsoft Disk Operating System. The shift to Graphical User Interface oriented Operating Systems began with the launch of the Microsoft Windows 3.0 operating system in 1990.
