What does MSEB mean?

MSEB is the short form for Maharashtra State Electricity Board which is a state-run electricity board. Formed in 1960, the board manages and regularizes the electricity supply in the state of Maharashtra. As of 1998.

It became the second-largest electricity board after NTPC in India. The headquarters of the board is situated in the capital city of Maharashtra, Mumbai. Established on June 20, 1960, under the Electricity Supply Acts of 1948, the company succeeded the Bombay Electrical Board.

Structure of the MSEB

The Maharashtra State Electricity Board split up into 4 constituent companies in 2005, according to the Electricity Act of 2003. The four companies are:

• MSEB Holding Company Limited – It holds a stake in all the three other companies
• Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited or the Mahavitaran. It is the 2nd largest electricity distribution entity across the world and the largest in India in terms of consumers it serves. It serves a total area of 308 thousand square kilometers and as of 2019, has an annual revenue of INR 84000 crore.
• Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Company or Mahatransco is currently the major transmission company in the field of electricity in the state. The headquarters of the company is located in Bandra. It is headed by the Managing Director, Mr. Dinesh Waghmare whereas Mr. Nitin Raut is the chairman of the company.
• Maharashtra State Power Generation Company is the major electricity generating constituent of the MSEB with a total production of more than 14000MW. It is headed by Mr. Nitin Raut who is the chairman while Mr. Sanjay Khandare is the Managing Director.
