What does NMK mean?

NMK is the short form for the National Museums of Kenya. It is a state-run committee looking after the management of heritage sites such as museums and monuments in the African country of Kenya.

The headquarters of the corporation and simultaneously the Nairobi National Museum lie on Museum Hill, a region near the Uhuru highway between the Westlands and the Central Business Districts in Nairobi. The committee is responsible for carrying out national heritage research and experts in subjects such as ethnography, paleontology, biodiversity research and its conservation.

History of NMK

The National Museum of Kenya has its history dating back to 1910 when the East Africa Natural History Society established a museum in Nairobi. It was proposed purely because of colonial reasons for the settlers to prepare a place for preserving and keeping their collections of specimens.

In 1929, the colonial government agreed to the Museum Hill land and in September 1930, the Coryndon Museum was established. When the country attained independence in 1963, the museum was changed to the National Museum of Kenya.
