What does PCOS mean?

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome Or PCOS is a common menstrual disorder characterized by delayed or irregular menstrual cycles and other menstrual problems. It is also called polycystic ovarian disorder or PCOD. 

This condition is often a result of hormonal imbalance or large ovaries, often caused by extreme environments or genetics. PCOS is a commonly diagnosed condition with more than 1 million cases each year in India alone. 

What happens during PCOS? 

PCOS affects the ovaries within the female body. Each ovary contains a certain amount of male hormones- androgens. This affects the functioning of the ovaries that release a mature egg every month, thus, affecting the level of progesterone and estrogen – the hormones responsible for causing menstrual cycles.

Symptoms of PCOS

Symptoms of PCOS could be found in women right from when they get their first period, or anywhere till they reach menopause. The most commonly found result is delayed periods. Many women who have PCOS go through one menstrual cycle in three months. Many get fewer than 8 or none at all.
