What does TERI mean?

TERI is the short form of the term, Trailing Edge Ring Indicator. It is a register that is responsible for indicating the transformations on the Ring Indicator line from high to a low state or vice versa. The Ring Indicator goes from a modem into the computer with a purpose to indicate that the phone line is ringing.

Whenever the indicator shows a state change, an interrupt is generated. This hardware interrupt makes sure that a certain program is informed regarding a state change of the Ring line indicator. This reduces the need to poll the state of the pin constantly by the software.

Difference between TERI and other pins

As compared to the other pin in a PC’s 9-pin RS-232 port, the Trailing Edge Ring Indicator is a one-way signal connecting the modem and the computer. Technically, this connection is called the DCE to DTE connection.
