What does WLH mean?

The full form of WLH is Windows Live Hotmail. Windows Live Hotmail was based on the Software as a Service (SaaS) model. Windows Live Hotmail was the successor of Hotmail and the predecessor of the current Outlook.

Windows Live Hotmail provided multiple IT services, one of the main of which being Webmail, i e providing electronic mail solutions which can be accessed via web browsers. Other services provided by Windows Live Hotmail were in the domain of task management, contact management, calendar services and other allied services. 

History

Windows Live Hotmail was the successor of Hotmail, which was founded in 1996. Hotmail was founded by Sabeer Bhatia and Jack Smith. Hotmail was one of the earliest webmail services, i.e providing electronic mail solutions that could be accessed from anywhere using a web browser. Hotmail was a success in terms of consumer base as it reported around 8.5 million subscribers by December 1997.

Hotmail was acquired by Microsoft in 1997. The acquisition of Hotmail took place in the month of December, with the deal costing Microsoft 400 million United States Dollars for the acquisition of Hotmail. Following its acquisition by Microsoft, Hotmail was rebranded as MSN Hotmail and became part of the MSN (Microsoft Network) ecosystem which consisted of multiple internet-based services. MSN Hotmail was a success in terms of the number of users as it reported around 30 million users by February 1999, making it the largest webmail service provider at that time. 

MSN Hotmail was later rebranded as Microsoft Live Hotmail in 2007, with multiple technological advancements, focused on better speed, better accessibility, expanding storage, and more efficient and user-friendly experience. Windows Live Hotmail is part of the Windows Live ecosystem of services provided by Windows. Windows Live Hotmail integrated multiple additional features such as the windows web browser being with the ability to add Bing search results i.e. images, contacts, and maps etc. to the mail.

Additionally, in later updates, several newer features were integrated into the Windows Live Hotmail service. Some of this included inbox sweeping, and expanded storage for images, attachments and Microsoft Office documents to 10 Gigabytes. Windows Live Hotmail after multiple updates, also featured integrations with other Windows Live services, creating a Windows Live ecosystem. These integrated services included Windows Live Office and Windows Live SkyDrive (service allowing file hosting on the internet) among others.

The Windows Live Hotmail initially transitioned into its current stage in the form of Outlook.com. The beta release of Outlook took place in 2012, which allowed the free upgradation from Hotmail to Outlook. The update was completed by 2013 and Outlook reported 400 million users by 2013. Apart from advancements in the security domain, the current outlook.com also boasts additional features such as skype integration to make Skype video calls from the Outlook ecosystem, It allows for the integration of Microsoft web office with Outlook, the feature to create and use email aliases, while all services provided in a more efficient manner.
