What does MM mean?

In the metric system, MM stands for the commonly used measuring unit called Millimeter. It is a standard unit of length that is one-tenth of a centimeter or one-thousandth of a meter. On the meter scale, the smallest measurement is the millimeter.

However, this is just the informal definition of the unit, millimeters. The formal definition of a millimeter is the distance travelled by electromagnetic energy in a span of 3.33564095*10-12 seconds in a vacuum. Scientifically, the units of measurement are expressed in terms of distance travelled by them in a certain amount of time.

Where are milliliters used?

Millimeters are a comparatively smaller unit of measurement as compared to meters and centimeters. This makes millimeters a relatively easier unit to measure small things such as the width of the guitar strings and the clipper size for cutting hair. The regular meter scale has increments of 1 millimeter whereas high-quality rulers have increments of 0.5mm.

Since it is a smaller unit of measurement, millimeters are generally used less as compared to centimeters or meters (the SI unit of measurement). But, there’s no one saying that mm is not an acceptable unit.

When did millimeters and other standard units originate?

The need for a standard system of weights and measures was experienced in 1795 in France by John Wilkins. He initially used the second pendulum to describe the units.

Over time, the units got revised, and most recently, in 1983, the meter was defined as the distance travelled by light in a vacuum in 1/ 299792458 seconds. With this, the measure of a centimeter and a millimeter came up which is used up till now.
