What does IR mean?

Infrared is the electromagnetic radiation produced when atoms absorb energy and then release it—the wavelength of infrared lies between 710 nm to 1 mm.

It is also the portion of the electromagnetic spectrum that consists of several electromagnetic radiations of the highest and lowest frequency like gamma rays, radio waves, visible lights, ultraviolet radiation, microwave, and X-ray.

People can sense the infrared in heat, but it is invisible to the human eye. The most natural sources of infrared are the sun and fire.

Classifications

Near-IR Band- It produces a little heat and has the longest wavelength. It has a wavelength of 750 nm to 1,300 nm (0.75 to 1.3 microns).

Intermediate IR Band (Mid-IR Band) – It consists of the frequency of 20THz to 215 THz and wavelength measuring 1,300 nm to 3,000 nm (1.3 to 3 microns).

Far-IR Band- It produces the most heat. The frequency lies between 0.3 THz to 20THz, and it has the shortest wavelength of 3,000 nm to 1mm (3 to 1,000 microns).
