What does PHE mean?

In Chemistry, Phe is the acronym for Phenylalanine. It is an α-Amino Acid. It has a benzyl group in place of the methyl group of alanine or a phenyl group in exchange for the terminal hydrogen of alanine. Phenylalanine has the formula C9H11NO2. (S)-2-Amino-3-phenylpropanoid acid is the IUPAC name of Phenylalanine.

Types of Phenylalanine:

Phenylalanine is of three types: D-phenylalanine, L-phenylalanine, and DL-phenylalanine (contains both D-form and L-form) which is artificially created in the laboratory. They have a similar structure. L-phenylalanine is an essential amino acid as our body can’t produce enough of it on its own.

Eggs, fish, meat, cheese, and milk are the major food sources in which L-phenylalanine is found. Anything made with sweetener Aspartame is also a common source of L-phenylalanine. D-phenylalanine, on the other hand, is not an essential amino acid.
