What does TPO mean?

TPO is the abbreviation for Travelling Post Office, a type of mobile post office in the form of a mail train. The train was used prominently used in Great Britain and Ireland during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

These post offices used to sort the mails while they travelled at speeds of 60-70 mph, dispatching them to different towns on their route. Travelling Post Offices first came into existence in 1838 when railroad cars were used to deliver mail and used horses for carrying the car. These railroad cars were converted into moving postal trains.

History of TPO

The first specifically designed train for being a Travelling Post Office was introduced in 1855. It operated between London and Bristol and was operated by the Great Western Railway. The operations of TPO kept on expanding all over England and also in Scotland and Wales.

Innovations followed in the system such as the development of lineside apparatus for picking and setting the mailbags. By the end of 1914, nearly 130 TPOs were operating all across the United Kingdom. Taking inspiration from the model, several other countries adopted the system of TPOs.

Working of TPO

The mail bags were transferred on and off at the platforms whereas some TPOs used the Mail Bag Exchange Apparatus which allowed the exchange of mails without halting. Large bags of mail were suspended on large nets hung from the side of trains, meanwhile depositing mail bags into trackside nets. The exchange of emails in this way continued and the number of exchange points reached 250 by 1913.

End of the TPO

The last transfer of mails through the apparatus was done on 4th October 1971 from Penrith, Cumbria to Carlisle. Several reasons led to the decline of the Travelling Post Offices such as:
