What does HID mean?

The High-Intensity Discharge bulb uses ionized gas and plasma to generate the electrical signal between the two electrodes. These lamps have high efficiency in producing electricity and have many applications because of their long life.

The HID Lamps consist of two tungsten electrodes located in the arc tube, and these tubes are filled with gasses and metal salts. The lamp sends the electric arc between the two electrodes. These arcs then heat the metal salts present in the tube to create the plasma. This plasma helps in the production of light.

Types of HID Lamps

Mercury-vapor Lamps

The mercury-vapor lamps use mercury to produce light. It contains the arc that is enclosed within the borosilicate glass bulb. The outer bulb protects from ultraviolet radiation and thermal isolation.

Metal Halide Lamps

Metal halide lamps have better efficiency and wattage range. This lamp uses halide, mercury, and argon, which increases the efficiency of these lamps. The efficiency ranges from 50 to 115 lumens per watt.

High-pressure sodium lamps

The high-pressure sodium lamps use the ballast circuit and the high-voltage electronic starter. The ceramic in the arc can bear a temperature up to 2,372 degrees Fahrenheit.

It has a high efficiency compared to other types and is hence suitable for outdoor and industrial applications.
