What does ISO mean?

ISO is the short form for International Organization for Standardization. As the name suggests, it is an international organization granting and developing standards. The body is composed of members elected from the standard organizations of the member states. It works for providing standards for a variety of products and services.

The primary motive of the organization is to facilitate trade along with improving the safety, quality and processes involved in the products. The headquarters of the ISO is located in Geneva, Switzerland where the representatives of the member countries and other standard organizations meet.

History of ISO

The organization was established on 23rd February 1947 with its headquarters in Geneva. Originally, an organization named the International Federation of National Standardizing Associations was founded in 1926. But during World War II, the association was suspended.

After the war got over, it was approached by the UNSCC for forming a new body for establishing global standards. Members from 25 countries met in London in October 1946 and agreed to the formation of the International Organization for Standardization which began its operations in February 1947.

Structure of the ISO

The ISO is not a governing body instead it is a voluntary body consisting of members who are authorities from their respective countries. These members meet at the General Assembly of the ISO for discussing the objectives of ISO and seeking improvement in it. It is coordinated by a Central Secretariat based in Geneva.

The technical board holds the responsibility for around 250 technical committees and the development of ISO standards. There is also a council of 20 members formed on a rotating basis for providing crucial guidance and advisory which involves the allocation and setting up of the annual budget of the body.
