What does AES mean?

Advanced Encryption Standard is a block cipher with a key size ranging from 128, 192, and 256 bits. The minimum length that a cipher can process is 128 bits at a time. AES operates on bytes rather than bits.

It replaced the triple-DES, which was considered slow and not designed to tackle large key sizes. It was also found to be more vulnerable to attacks, thereby more advanced encryption standards.

The AES was developed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology in 1997. It is now incorporated by Government agencies and many other institutes for cyber security and data protection.
