What does TDR mean?

TDR is the abbreviation for Time Domain Reflectometry, a method used to recognize the total length of the cable and other characteristics of the electrical lines using the reflected waveforms. It is a very prominent method and is done with the help of a reflectometer.

It also figures out the location joints along with the cables, the location of low resistive faults and the cable interruptions. For doing this, the TDR transmits a low voltage pulse in the cable and a reflection can be seen whenever an impedance change is encountered.

The method used in TDR

When the low voltage pulse is transmitted in the cable, if the conductor is properly terminated and has uniform impedance, there will be no occurrence of reflection. In such a case, the signal gets absorbed by the termination. If there are variations in impedance, then the signal gets reflected back towards the source much like a radar.

The amplitude of the reflected signal determines the discontinuity impedance. The time taken to reflect can also specify the distance of the discontinuity. The analysis of the shape, duration and magnitude of the waveform can specify a lot of characteristics regarding the nature of the variation.

Types of TDRs

There are several variations of the TDR technique such as Spread spectrum time domain reflectometry which determines faults in complex and noisy systems like aircraft. Another variation of TDR is Coherent optical time-domain reflectometry which mixes the reflected signal with an oscillator and filters the noise afterward.

Usage of TDR

Time Domain Reflectometry can be applied in several different ways such as:
