What does RPN mean?

RPN is the abbreviation for Reverse Polish Notation. It is a technique used in mathematical computations for representing expressions. Under this method, the operators are placed following the arguments which are being operated on.

The approach and the method were proposed by Don Warren, Arthur Brooks and Jesse Wright. Later, it was further extended and developed by Charles L. Hamblin, an Australian computer scientist and philosopher. He suggested the contrary method of the Polish notation which involved operators before the operands and developed the algorithms regarding it.

Explanation and example

The Reverse Polish Notation follows an approach in which the operands are written first followed by the operators. An expression like a * (b + c) in Reverse Polish Notation is written as a b c +*

If the given expression contains multiple operations, then the operations are written after the final operands. For example, an expression such as 3 + 4 – 1 is written in RPN form as 3 4 + 1 -.

Conversion into RPN format

The algorithm for converting a general expression to its corresponding RPN format is known as the Shunting-Yard method. It was developed by a person named Edsger W. Dijkstra. The algorithm takes in infix expressions and converts them into Reverse Polish Notation. The algorithm is named as the operation under it is quite similar to the shunting yard of a railway.

Solving a Reverse Polish Notation

A simple computational approach for converting an expression into its corresponding RPN format is given as follows:
