What does DVM mean?

DVM is the short form for Digital Voltmeter. A voltmeter is a device that measures the electrical potential difference between two distinct points. The voltage measured by the voltmeter can either be AC or DC.

A digital voltmeter displays the value of voltage as discrete numerical figures whereas its counterpart, analogue voltmeters, use pointers to depict the reading of voltage. It does so using a converter that converts the analogue voltage into digital voltage.

Working on a digital voltmeter

A digital voltmeter is based on the conversion of analogue signals into a series of pulses. The conversion process begins with the application of input voltage at the pulse generator which generates a pulse from the input voltage.

The width of the pulse is directly proportional to the input signal. The output generated from it is fed into the AND gate in one leg. The other leg of the AND gate gets the original input signal as its output.

The AND gate now produces a train of pulses which is fed into an inverter which inverts the positive train of the pulse into negative. The counter counts the triggers within the duration and this count is displayed as the voltage by the display.
