Currently, UNESCO has 193 member countries along with 11 associate members and is headquartered at the World Heritage Centre in Paris. The Parent organization of UNESCO is United Nations Economic and Social Council and is headed by Audrey Azoulay, the Director-General of UNESCO. The founding mission of UNESCO was primarily governed by the aftermath of World War II when the world required peace, harmony, sustainable development, human rights and collaboration among the nations.

All these goals are accomplished through five major domains of life – social sciences, culture, communication, natural sciences and education. It specializes in programs that promote education, and literacy, provide technical training, advance sciences and press freedom while promoting cultural diversity and history.

The roots of UNESCO can be traced from 1942 when the European powers were against the Germans and allies. European powers met in the United Kingdom for the Conference of Allied Ministers of Education. The primary goal was to re-establish the educational system once peace would be restored.

The initiative gained prominence and more countries started joining. Upon the reference of CAME, the United Nations Conference for education and culture organization was set up in London from 1st to 16th November 1945. Thus, a new organization leading toward moral and intellectual solidarity was established.

The organization is governed by the General Conference consisting of member and associate states. They meet on a bi-annual basis for setting the programs and budget. The election for Executive Board also takes place which takes care of the work along with the appointment of the Director-General of UNESCO for four years.
