What does AAJE mean?

AAJE is the short form for American Academy for Judicial Education. It is an entity under the American Bar Association and was established in 1963. The organization is responsible for training judicial candidates coming from all across the United States. 

The AAJE shifted to the University of Nevada, Reno in 1964 and soon in 1977 became a non-profit educational organization. It was established since the country had a deficiency of trained judges and educational facilities for them. The institution exists for the purpose of teaching judges how they should approach their jobs.

History of AAJE

American colleges and universities do not have a prescribed course of study for judicial education. Most of the judges have prior experience in the courtroom as trial attorneys but no specific judicial education. This was the primary reason for the establishment of the American Academy for Judicial Education.

In the 1960s, proposals for judicial education had been confronted by the American Bar Association. Before it, education for judges was considered to be confessing about inadequacy. This proved wrong as the first year of enrollment saw a huge number of candidates enrolling for the limited seats.

The curriculum taught in AAJE

Classroom courses teach various aspects of being a judge such as the admission of evidence, conduction of trial, ethics of being a judge, order writing, opinion and decision making, free and fair proceedings, guarding against bias and management of court premises.
