What does ASAN mean?

ASAN or Autistic Self Advocacy Network is an American nonprofit organization run by and for autistic people. It is an organization that thinks about disabilities of the autistic community. It makes sure that the laws and policies meet autistic people’s needs and work enough to change the people’s thinking about them. ASAN advocates for the U.S. government to adopt such legislation and policies that impact positively on autistic people. The headquarters of ASAN is in Washington DC. 

History

Former president, Ari Ne’eman and former board of trustees member and vice-chairman of Development, Scott Michael Robertson are the co-founders of ASAN in November 2006. In the early days, ASAN worked on fighting the use of aversive, restraint and seclusion in special education. It spoke out against Autism Speaks and against NYU Child Study Center’s Ransom notes and campaign which compared autism, ADOH and OCD with kidnappers holding children hostage. Now, Julia Bascom is the executive director of ASAN. 

Mission

The goal of ASAN is to make sure that autistic people can enjoy equal access, rights and opportunities. ASAN works to empower autistic people to take control of their own lives and the future of their community. 

Services

 ASAN works on the following matters- 

• Create social awareness among people about autistic people’s needs. Make the society more inclusive in the matter.
• Protect disability rights and civil rights.
• Advocate government on policymaking for the autistic community.
• Provide autistic training to autistic self-advocates.
• Make educational resources for autistic people.

Activities

Scientific Issues

ASAN is partnered with AASPIRE (Academic Autistic Spectrum Partnership In Research and Education) which brings autistic and academic communities together to perform research projects in the need of the autistic community. 

Special Events

On 1st March, Day of Mourning, local chapters of ASAN and individual groups host candlelight vigils for autistic people who are murdered by their caregivers.

Publication

Navigating College Handbook, a book for autistic people in college was published by ASAN. They also published the anthropology ‘Loud Hands: Autistic People, Speaking’.
