What does CORS mean?

Cross-origin Resource Sharing or CORS, as its name suggests is a feature/mechanism that allows the sharing of resources in multiple formats from foreign browsers/origins. It is a feature offered by a web browser wherein a server can get access to resources outside of a given domain. 

What is it required for?

While websites need to interact with each other, they need to get access to some files or resources outside their domain. Here is when CORS comes to use. However, this also includes the risk of breach of security. One website could steal confidential data from the other website.

To counter this, the concept of the Same-origin policy was introduced. This, however, made it very restrictive for websites to access data before their territory. 

How does a browser ask for resource sharing?

The CORS is an HTTP-based mechanism and sends a preflight request to the other domain, which is in possession of the desired resource to check whether the origin-source browser would permit access. 

Since it is an HTTP-based feature, the sharing requests are made through HTTP headers and bodies that contain certain codes, as per the desired resource. The header contains information about the type of message, each having a specific set of codes.

For example, the requesting header could contain Accept: text/Html, Cookie: Version=1, which translates to “I want you (origin browser) to accept the request to share a text, and here is the cookie of my (requesting browser) site”.

The body doesn’t contain key or code words, it could contain the desired resource itself.
