What does DANICS mean?

DANICS is the abbreviation for Delhi, Andaman & Nicobar Islands Civil Services. It is a civil service regarding the administration of the National Capital Region and the other Union Territories. The recruitment of the officers is done directly through the Civil Service Examinations. The postings and recruitment are controlled by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Why are DANICS officers required?

DANICS recruitment is done especially for the union territories of India. This is because they have different needs, cultures, a political and economic structure that requires different governance and administration.

For this difference, DANICS was kept different from the other administrative services. As compared to IAS, which is an A-level service, DANICS is a B-level service.

Selection criteria

A candidate wishing to get into DANICS has to qualify for the Civil Services Examination organized by the Union Public Services Commission. The exam is held on an annual basis and is a three-stage process consisting of a preliminary examination, the main examination and an interview round.

One-third of the recruitment is done through promotions of non-gazetted officers while the rest is done through the above-mentioned direct recruitment process.

Postings under DANICS

The selected officers are firstly trained for a period of two years. After the training period, they are appointed as the Sub Divisional Magistrate or Assistant Collector. Further, they are posted as officers of prominent bodies such as Municipal Corporations or District Administration Services. 

They may also be appointed as Deputy Secretary in major ministries of Union Territories. As they gain experience and reach senior-level positions, they are inducted into the AGMUT cadre of Administrative Services.
