What does DDiS mean?

DDIS is the short form for the Direct Diesel Injection System. It is a fuel injection system that dates back several decades. The Direct injection engines inject the fuel directly into the combustion chamber above the piston.

The air is compressed in these chambers which raises the temperatures to extremely high limits i.e. above 400 degrees Celsius. These high temperatures ignite the fuel i.e. diesel and it catches fire. Solely, for this reason, it is also called a compression ignition system.

These systems are different as compared to their successors, Common Rail Direct Injection systems in the way they supply the fuel to the injections and their operations.

Components of DDIS

A Direct Diesel Injection System involves several components such as:

  • Fuel Injection Pump – It supplies a precise amount of fuel to the cylinders at specific periods according to the position of the piston.
  • Fuel filter – it purifies and filters the impurities in the fuel.
  • Fuel feed pump
  • High-pressure lines
  • Injectors – the injection pump feeds the fuel to the injectors according to the load through the high-pressure lines.

Working of DDIS

An engine – petrol or diesel – works almost in the same manner. The steps involved in their working are:

  • Intake – the fuel is first injected into the combustion chamber.
  • Compression – the fuel is then added into the compression chamber where it is compressed to high pressures.
  • Power stroke – the injectors atomize diesel to high pressures ranging from 10 thousand psi to 30 thousand psi.

Advantages and Disadvantages of DDIS

Direct Diesel Injection systems, on one hand, can be really advantageous since they support a longer engine life, have comparatively lower maintenance and are quite sturdy in nature. On the other hand, they have some drawbacks such as heavy components, sluggish operations, lower engine speeds and high noise and vibrations levels.
