What does ELE mean?

ELE is the short form for Extinction Level Event. Also known as a mass extinction event, the event is characterized by a rapid and huge reduction in the biodiversity of the Earth. The event can be identified through a sharp change in the abundance and diversity of organisms. When the rate of speciation is less than the rate of extinction, an extinction-level event is said to occur. 

There is a difference and confusion regarding what is called a ‘major’ extinction-level event. Through various views and opinions, estimates suggest that over the last 540 million years, there have been five to twenty extinction events, depending upon what is viewed as major.
