What does FDDI mean?

FDDI stands for Fiber Distributed Data Interface. It is a pathway for data transmission within a local area. It mainly makes use of optical fiber as its medium of transmission. It later started the use of copper cables. And hence it was called Copper Distributed Data Interface i.e. CDDI. Later standardized as, Twisted-Pair Physical Medium-Dependent or also known as Twisted-Pair Distributed Data Interface.

FDDI was made in use in the local areas by Fast Ethernet which was of 100 Mbit/s speeds and at a lower price. It extends to 200 kilometers range for data transmission. FDDI is a ring form of token network and the protocol that it uses was derived from the IEEE 802.4 token bus. Along with having a wide geographical coverage, FDDI can also cover thousands of users. FDDI also provides a Dual Attached Station as well as Single-Attached Station.

FDDI is a product of the American National Standards Institute and it agrees with the OSI model. The process eventually started in the 1980s. The FDDI network usually has two rings, one is a backup in case the first/primary ring is damaged or fails to perform.

The primary/first ring has a capacity of 100 Mbit/s. When a network is not capable of inculcating a secondary ring, then the first ring’s capacity can be increased to 200 Mbit/s. A single ring can extend to the maximum while a dual ring can go up to 100km. In some cases, FDDI has a larger frame size and permits better rates of data.
