What does FRCS mean?

Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons is a designation or a title given to a medical professional indicating his excellence in his respective field. It is also a designation required to practice as a senior surgeon in the United Kingdom and Ireland. 

It is a degree or diploma-like certification given to surgeons after they pass the exam designed for an FRCS position. The recognition is given collectively by four royal colleges of medical studies on an intercollegiate basis. 

These 4 colleges are:

• the Royal College of Surgeons of England, 
• the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland
• the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh 
• the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow.

This designation isn’t exclusive to surgeons but all medical professionals, each having their respective area of expertise. Also, this system of awarding a designation isn’t exclusive to the UK and Ireland, several countries like Canada and New Zealand follow the same. 

How to receive the FRCS?

To receive the FRCS post, one needs to clear an exam set up by the 4 royal colleges of surgery. These exams are administered by two bodies, one which looks into domestic exams, i.e., for doctors from the home area. And the other one looks into international exams, i.e., the ones given by doctors from other countries who wish to practice as senior surgeons in the UK or Ireland.

The former body is the Joint Committee on Intercollegiate Examinations and the latter one is the Joint Surgical Colleges Fellowship Examination, which handles overseas examinations.

Additionally, a surgeon who clears this exam can also choose a further specialized area in surgery, for example, FRCS in Orthopedics, or FRCS in Urology, etc.

The FRCS being a level of expertise, requires its eligible candidates to have a graduation degree in medicine and an MD in surgery, followed by a certified practice experience as junior doctor.
