What does GAIL mean?

GAIL is the acronym for Gas Authority of Indian Limited. It is a public-owned natural gas producer and exporter looking after the production and distribution of natural gas all over the country.

It is India’s leading natural gas producer along with other operations such as trade and transmission of gas, LPG production and transmission, production of petrochemicals, city gas, etc. The Public Sector Undertaking owns approximately 13,340 kilometers of gas pipelines all over the nation which are used to transport gas products across India.

Operations of the GAIL

GAIL comes under the ownership of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Government of India and is headquartered at the GAIL Bhawan in New Delhi. The PSU has been entitled to the Maharatna tag along with 10 other PSUs enjoying the special status.

Of the total 13,340 kilometers of pipeline, around 6000 km are its own and nearly 2000 km via the two JV. In addition, an additional pipeline of nearly 1800 km has been authorized for execution stages.

The company was established on 16th August 1984 under the central ministry as a central public sector undertaking. Its primary motive was the construction, maintenance and operations of the Hazira Vijaypur Jagdishpur pipeline project.

The project held enormous importance for the country since it was one of the largest cross-country pipeline projects in the world which eventually led to the founding stones of the natural gas sector in India.
