What does GOI mean?

GOI, the acronym for Government of India is nothing but the Union Government that our Indian constitution has created as the legislative, judicial authority & executive for governing the 28 states’ union & the 8 union territories. New Delhi is the place where the government’s seat is located.

The Government of India was formed in the 1950s on 26 January (that is 71 years ago). The seat of GOI is in Rashtrapati Bhavan (the Indian president’s Official Residence). Parliament is the legislature of GOI & Rajya Sabha is its Upper House. And, the lower house is the Lok Sabha.

The Government of India is a quasi-federal type of government, which has elected officials both at the union & state levels & also at the local levels. The Prime Minister, the Indian government’s head, is appointed, at the national level, by none other than India’s president, from the party/coalition, that possesses the seats’ majority in the lower parliament or Lok Sabha. 

The Lok Sabha members are directly elected through universal adult suffrage for 5 years term. This voting system is the first-past-the-post voting system. Whereas the Rajya Sabha members, who depict the states, get elected with the vote of the State Legislative Assembly members through proportional representation. The exception to these members is the 12 members, whom the President nominates. 

At present, India has the world’s largest democracy & there are nearly 900 million voters who are eligible for voting, as per the survey report of 2019.
