What does HEPA mean?

HEPA is an acronym for High-Efficiency Particulate Air. Thus, the filters employing HEPA technology are termed HEPA filters. HEPA filters are quite different from the other filters out there simply because they are duly tested and approved to be successfully named as a HEPA filter.

HEPA filters, according to the Institute of Environmental Sciences and Technology, should trap or remove 99.97% of the particles in the air such as dust, pollen, bacteria or any particle which has a size of 0.3 microns. This doesn’t limit these filters to this size of particles, they can trap smaller particles as well but for the HEPA moniker, they must qualify the threshold value.

What are HEPA filters made up of?

The HEPA filters are generally made up of borosilicate plastic fibres that are bound together by an acrylic binder. They are made up of fine threads of glass having a diameter less than 1 micron which is more than 75 times smaller than the diameter of a human hair. The threads are then combined in the form of a tangled mat containing around 2500 layers of glass threads.

Working of HEPA filters

The filter is a web of fibres that traps the various particles present in the air. This can happen through four different processes:

• Impaction – The largest particles such as dust, mould and pollen are caught by colliding to the web and are caught there.
• Sieving – Some particles get through some layers but are still larger so get stuck later on.
• Interception – Due to inertia, particles flow through and get stuck in fibres.
• Diffusion – Smaller particles due to fast motion are likely to hit sometimes and get stuck.

There is a difference in HEPA filters based on their composition and uses. Different manufacturers use different technologies, some focus on trapping much smaller particles whereas some focus on rapid cleansing of filters thus increasing their efficiency.
