What does ICSI mean?

ICSI is the abbreviation for Institute of Company Secretaries of India. It is a professional organization under the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Government of India. The institute is responsible for promoting, developing and regulating the company secretary profession in India. 

Established on 4th October 1968, the organization is a statutory body under the Company Secretaries Act of 1980 presented by the Parliament of India. The headquarters of the institute is situated in New Delhi and has regional offices in other major cities such as Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata. It has an overall membership of more than 65000 company secretaries and is headed by President CS Devendra V. Deshpande.

Becoming a CS

The Institute of Company Secretaries of India is the chief organization responsible for the profession of Company Secretaries in India. It is one of the most principal posts in a company handling the primary legal aspects of the enterprise or individuals.

The individual is responsible for keeping the records, advising the directors regarding financial growth, auditing the tax reports and ensuring that the company follows the legal regulations. Thus, it is a very crucial job and requires immense training and practice.

Role of ICSI

The Institute provides students with the necessary skills and training that they would be requiring in their professional careers. The CS program is conducted at three levels – The foundation level which has been recently replaced by CS Executive Entrance Test, the Executive Level and the Professional Level.

Admissions to these programs are open throughout the year whereas the exam is conducted twice a year in June and December. For appearing in the December examination, the candidate needs to register with ICSI by March 31 and for the June examination, latest by September 30.

Eligibility for ICSI

For participating in the CS Executive Entrance Test, the candidate must have cleared class 12th from any stream from a recognized board. For candidates who have completed their graduation have to appear only at the Executive and Professional Levels. People who have completed graduation, post-graduation or Foundation program of CA are eligible for the CS Executive program directly.
