What does IGMDP mean?

Integrated Guided Missile Development Program or IGMDP is the research and development program under the Ministry of Defense. 

Roles & Responsibilities

• IGMDP is involved in the manufacturing of missiles. 
• IGMDP works with the Ordnance Factories Board, Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), and the Government of India. 
• Former President of India, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, initiated IGMDP in 1983. 
• Dr. Abdul Kamal was the project director of SLV-3 at ISRO during the launch of IGMDP.
• DRDO announced the successful completion of the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme in 2008. 

There were four projects which were targeted to develop. These were:

• Prithvi- Short-range missile (surface-to-surface)
• Akash- medium-range missile (surface-to-air)
• Trishul- Short-range missile (surface-to-air)
• Nag – Anti-tank missile (Third generation missile)

Prithvi Missile:

• This missile was the first Indian ballistic missile developed indigenously. 
• The technology of this missile has similarities with the Soviet SA-2 missile ( surface-to-air). 
• The Prithvi missiles have versions like Prithvi I, Prithvi II, and Prithvi III. 

Akash missile:

• This missile’s manufacturing cost was very high compared to other rockets. 
• This surface-to-air missile has a medium range of 30 km, and the Akash missile is RADAR dependent. 
• The altitude range of the Akash missile is up to 18 km. 
• There are design similarities in Akash and SA-6 missiles. 

Trishul Missile:

• This missile has a short range of 12 km. This missile was developed to be added to the naval defense of India. 
• The Trishul Missile was removed from the category of serving missile. 

Nag Missile:
