What does IMD mean?

The Indian meteorological department (IMD) is the Indian government’s official department that regulates, observes, studies and reports meteorological chances and conditions throughout the Indian sub-continent. It is a part of the Indian Ministry of Earth Sciences, headed by a cabinet minister.

The functioning of this body assumes great importance given the fact that three parts of the country is surrounded by major oceans and are prone to heavy flooding, extreme weather fluctuations, cyclones, etc. 

History

The IMD was established in 1875 after the Calcutta cyclone in 1864 and the subsequent famines which required pre-existing reports of meteorological study to be organized and structured to form the Indian meteorological department. The then IMD was headed by Sir John Eliot and was capitalized at Calcutta, which then shifted to Shimla, Pune and is now in Delhi. 

It is a member of the world meteorological organization and also one of the six Regional Specialised Meteorological Centres of the WMO. The IMD has its branches stationed in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Guwahati and Nagpur. 

Functions

The main tasks of the IMD are to study, report, and organize data about the meteorological changes and conditions within the country, and to publish weather forecasts and other weather-related services. In fact, the IMD gained such popularity because of its role in tracking, reporting, and predicting the annual rainfall, which could have drastic effects on the agricultural system. To do this, the body makes use of satellites controlled by the Indian National Satellite system, and by other organizations such as the ISRO. 

Organization

A director-general of meteorology heads the IMD, and one such official is placed at every branch of the IMD. The body has multiple units, specialized in each sub-part of meteorologies, such as Forecasting Offices, Agrometeorological Advisory Service Centers, automatic weather stations (AWS),[8] Hydro-meteorological Office, Flood Meteorological Offices, Area Cyclone Warning Centers and Cyclone Warning Centers.
