What does ITBP mean?

Indo-Tibetan Border Police was set on 24 October 1962 to secure at the Indo-Tibetan Border. ITBP serves the entire stretch of the India-China Border, starting from Karakoram Pass in Ladakh till Jachep La in Arunachal Pradesh. The whole space is 3,488 km long.

ITBP was initially started only with four battalions under the CRPF Act, but later in 1992, the parliament enacted the ITPB with different rules.

ITBP has seven logistic establishments, 56 service battalions, 17 training centers, and four specialist battalions.

• ITBP provides security to many installations like Rashtrapati Bhawan, Rumtek Monastery, Tihar Jail, Vice President House, and many more.
• Currently, it is providing security to the Indian Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan.
• Special training camps have been organized in Delhi and Tigri to prepare them for deployment in the UN Mission.
• ITBP also contributes to the UN Peacekeeping mission. Many battalions are deployed in Namibia, Cambodia, Bosnia, and Angola.
• Eight battalions are posted at the Naxalite area of Rajnandgaon, Kondagaon District, and Narayanpur.
• It is also responsible for carrying out rescue operations in the Himalayas. The ITBP saved 33,009 pilgrims from Char Dham Yatra in 2013.
• ITBP battalions are the only humans present in the inner Himalayas, so they preserve and maintain the ecology, flora, and fauna.
• They provide security to the local people on the northern border by detecting and preventing border violations.
