What does JEE mean?

JEE is the abbreviation for the engineering entrance examination named Joint Entrance Examination. The examination is conducted for admission to various engineering colleges in India which include some prestigious institutions. The exam is constituted of two different examinations: JEE Mains and JEE Advanced.

The examination is conducted by the National Testing Agency from 2019. Before that, it was being conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education. Previously, the exam was conducted once a year giving less opportunity to the candidates. But now it is conducted twice a year for admission to the undergraduate engineering programs all over the country.

History of JEE

Previously, the Joint Entrance Examination has termed the All India Engineering Entrance Examination. AIEEE was equivalent to the current JEE Main while the equivalent of JEE Advanced was named IIT-JEE or Indian Institute of Technology Joint Engineering Entrance.

This change was brought about in 2012. The paper pattern of the examination has also endured constant changes over the years. It was being conducted in an offline pen and paper mode but off-late it has been conducted in the form of a computer-based test. This had made the examination conduction much more secure than before.

JEE Main & JEE Advanced

The lower level of the examination is named JEE Main which is the gateway to admissions in engineering courses at the National Institute of Technology, Indian Institutes of Information Technology and other technical institutions. The paper consists of two papers – Paper I and Paper II. Paper I is for admission towards BE/B. Tech courses while paper II is towards the B.Arch and B.Planning courses.

The JEE Advanced is the examination for admission to the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology and other prominent institutions such as IISc, IIST, IISER and RGIPT. The candidates who clear the cut-off for the JEE Main are eligible for contesting the JEE Advanced.

Eligibility for JEE

For contesting the examination, the candidate must have Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as the primary subjects in their class 12th and should have scored a minimum of 75% aggregate in the qualifying examination for class 12th.
