What does KLM mean?

KLM is the short form for Koninklijke Luchtvaart Maatschappij. In its literal translation, the term refers to the Royal Aviation Company, Inc. The company is the flagship carrier airline in the Netherlands. It is also known as Royal Dutch Airlines and is headquartered at the Amstelveen whereas the central hub of the airline is situated in Amsterdam near the Amsterdam Airport.

It was inaugurated in 1920 with its first flight from Amsterdam to London. Before its merger with Air France which occurred in 2004, the airline company was the oldest operating airline in the world.

History of the KLM

The airline was inaugurated on 7th October 1919 when eight Dutch businessmen joined hands to lead to the foundation as a commercial airline company. Albert Plesman was appointed as the first director and administrator of the airline.

The first flight took place on 17th May 1920 and was headed by Jerry Shaw who flew it from Croydon Airport in London to Amsterdam. The first intercontinental flight occurred to Jakarta on 1st October 1924. The Second World War caused restrictions on the operations of the airline but post the war arena, it immediately started to rebuild its operations.

Merger with Air France

Air France and KLM on 30th September 2003, agreed to a merger program that would lead to the foundation of a joint holding company named Air France-KLM. In February 2004, the merger of airlines was approved and by September 2004, the merger program was complete. This led to the world’s largest airline group.

Effect of COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic heavily affected the operations and profits of KLM. It also reduced nearly 6000 job positions. In December 2021, the merger company announced an order for a lot of 100 Airbus A320Neos which would be divided between the KLM and Transavia.
