What does KVIC mean?

India, while adopting its Constitution, included the provisions of the Directive Principles of the State policy. These principles are like guidelines for the state or government while formulating rules and running the country. 

These DPSPs have a provision that states that the government shall promote small businesses and the ones that preserve Indian heritage. Out of this provision, the government of India set up the Khadi and Village industries commission or body. 

What is KVIC? 

This is a statutory body established under the Khadi and Village Industries Commission Act of 1956. It is a central body created by the parliament of India and run by the ministry of medium, micro and small businesses. 

Aims

As mentioned, it is a constitutional provision that the state shall employ measures to promote and support small businesses and the ones that promote the Indian heritage. Keeping in mind this, the aim of the body is to plan, promote, assist, aid, organize, and establish khadi and village industries in rural and underdeveloped areas. It also aims to coordinate with other agencies and bodies that aim at the development of villages. 

Establishment

The KVIC was set up in April 1957 during the second 5-year economic plan. It is a successor of the All India Khadi and Village Industries Board. 

Administration

It is headquartered in Bombay and has 5 zonal establishments in Delhi, Bhopal, Bangalore, Kolkata, and Guwahati. Additionally, it has an office in every state. 

The KVIC is headed by an elected chairman. The current chairman is Vinai Kumar Saxena.

Objectives

The objectives of this commission are to create employment in rural areas, to promote the sale of Khadi and traditional materials, to create saleable articles and finally, to create self-reliant villages. 

The ministry of small businesses passes the allocated funds to each state, which in turn passes on to cooperative societies, institutions, etc.
