What does NAVIC mean?
NAVIC is the acronym for Navigation with Indian Constellation. It is the operational name for the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite. It is a navigation system aimed at providing better and more accurate location services to the users.
It was launched by the Indian Space Research Organization covering the entire span of India and its nearby area. Currently, the system has a network of seven satellites along with two additional ones as standby on the ground level.
Development of NAVIC
The system was developed alongside a navigation center in Karnataka in 2013. 21 stations all across the country will be providing data for determining and monitoring the locations of satellites and their signals. The entire cost is estimated at around INR 14.2 billion where each satellite costs around INR 1.5 billion. The seven satellites along with the rockets would lay around INR 9.1 billion.
Evaluation of the signals began in September 2014 and NAVIC-based systems were made compulsory for commercial vehicles in April 2019.

In 2020, ISRO and Qualcomm signed a deal to integrate the NAVIC system in their chipsets. In January 2020, Snapdragon came up with its new chipsets – Snapdragon 720G, 662 and 460 – all incorporating NAVIC. As new chips came upon the scene, NAVIC support increased all across the country. This made the technology available to a large mass of people of India.
