NIOS is the abbreviation for National Institute of Open Schooling. It is a board of education working under the Central Government of India. Previously known as the National Open School, the institute was originally set up in 1989.

The institute was established by the Ministry of Human Resource Development for providing education facilities to every section of society with the motive of increasing the literacy levels of the country.
