What does NOIDA mean?

NOIDA, a city popularly known to be on the outskirts of Delhi, is the acronym for New Okhla Industrial Development Authority. As its name suggests, it is an industrial area planned by the Uttar Pradesh government. The city is located in Gautam Budhh Nagar district of UP and shares borders with Delhi.

The city is a planned industrial area playing host to multiple large industries, factories, production hubs and other commercially important places, both of India and foreign origin. Given its ideation as an industrial planned city, NOIDA is classified as a Special Economic Zone.

Location

Although it falls in the state of UP, it is commonly said to be a part of Delhi, because it falls under the  National Capital Region (NCR) of India. The city is administered and managed by the New Okhla Industrial Development Authority, which is situated in Greater Noida.

History

NOIDA was acknowledged as a city on the 17th of April 1976, and in commemoration, every year the day is celebrated as NOIDA day. It was formed under the UP Industrial Area Development Act, 1976.

NOIDA has a population of 637,272 citizens, as per the 2011 census. The climate of the city falls in extreme temperatures, with summers ranging around 40-50 degrees Celsius and winters from 8- negative degrees. The city being an economically advanced one, the infrastructure and amenities are well developed, which in turn has led to an 88.5% literacy rate among the citizens.
