What does PRTC mean?

PRTC stands for the PEPSU Road Transport Corporation. PEPSU is an abbreviation for the Patiala and East Punjab States Union. The PRTC is the body corporate responsible for road transportation affairs of PEPSU. 

Formation and History

The PRTC was set up in October 1956, in Patiala, Punjab under the Road Transport Corporations Act, 1950. Back then, the corporation just had 15 member buses under its authority. The corporation was established back when the state PEPSU was existent, and when PEPSU merged with present-day Punjab, PRTC became the road transport corporation for the whole of Punjab. The PRTC was set up with the aim of providing economical, efficient, and adequate road transport services to the people of Punjab. 

Number of buses

The corporation today has about 1075 buses under its control, covering an area of 3.5 lakh kilometers. It also owns 9 depots which are 

• Ludhiana, 
• Bhatinda, 
• Faridkot, 
• Chandigarh, 
• Kapurthala, 
• Bhudlada, 
• Sangrur, 
• Patiala, and 
• Barnala. 

The PRTC buses operate through the neighboring states of Punjab, like Uttrakhand, Haryana, Himachal, U.T., Delhi, and U.P.

The corporation owns different types of buses apart from the ordinary ones like AC buses, HVAC, MIDI buses, Volvos etc.the buses even have built-in GPS systems.

Administration

The PRTC is administered by a board of directors which is headed by a chairman. The entire affair of the corporation is jointly handled by the Managing director and general director. Additionally, buses under the PRTC also offer subsidies and concessions to people belonging to economically and otherwise handicapped communities, along with MPs/MLAs, students, senior citizens, etc. The corporation currently hosts around 4000 employees of multiple positions like drivers, laborers, conductors, operational staff, etc.
