What does SMPS mean?

SMPS is the short form for Switch Mode Power Supply. It is a power supply incorporating a switching regulator for the conversion of electrical power. It transfers power from a source to the DC loads while converting the current and voltage characteristics.

In a switch mode supply, the pass transistor continuously switches from on, off and low-dissipation stages. It minimizes the wastage of energy by spending very less duration in the high dissipation stage. As compared to linear supply, switched-mode can be considerably lighter and smaller since the transformer in the latter is much smaller.

The output thus created is rectified and smoothed for producing the intended DC voltage.

Switched-mode power supplies are much more efficient in nature and can reach up to 96%. This is because the switching transistor wastes very less power as compared to the linear regulators. It is also smaller in size, lighter in weight and produces less noise and high heat production.

Since the transistor is also small, the raw materials required are also less. On the other hand, they are quite complex, generate high amplitude, and produce high-frequency energy which must be blocked by a filter to prevent electromagnetic interference.
