What does UDF mean?

UDF is an abbreviation of the United Democratic Front. It is an organization having more than a hundred organizations linked to fighting against the apartheid law. All these organizations joined hands with each other and assisted each other in removing this law formed in 1983. In brief, it is an organization amalgamated of four hundred workers and students to rebel against the Tricameral Parliament.

Furthermore, the main intention was to establish a “non-racial, united South Africa in which discrimination is eliminated and in which community is saved from the organization and systematic racialism.” The development of the united democratic front has allowed black people in South Africa to participate more in the major activities of the country like politics, occupation, voting, etc.

The story behind the establishment of UDF?

Rev. Allan Boesak presented the foundation of the united democratic front at a Transvaal Anti-South African Indian Council Committee (TASC) conference on 23 January 1983. It was introduced at a conference led by Boesak.

The segment of his speech dedicated to the “united front” of “churches, community unions, business federations, student associations, and sports organizations” was not previously planned, although well accepted. He urged black people to take a complete interest in the politics of the country.
