What does UGC mean?

The University Grant Commission (UGC) is part of the university grant committee, founded in 1945 and was formally inaugurated by Abul Kalam Azad. 

Initially, the committee was set up to manage and control the work of three major central universities of the country: Aligarh, Banaras, and Delhi. Gradually, the committee was given in charge of all the universities of the country.

Furthermore, there are six different centers of the University grant commission: Hyderabad, Kolkata, Bhopal, Guwahati, and Bangalore. Besides, the headquarter of UGC is located in Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg, New Delhi.

Who is the Chairman of UGC?

Prof. Dhirendra Pal Singh (D. P. Singh) is the current chairman of the UGC (as of 2021 December), possessing 34 years of experience in education planning and managing educational infrastructure, teacher training, research, and development. 

He has also worked as the Director of the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and vice-chancellor of three reputed universities: Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi, and Dr. Hari Singh Gour University, Sagar and Devi Ahilya University, Indore.
