What is VHS?

History of VHS tapes

The first attempt at VHS started in 1971. Sony introduced the HumanIK format but it failed because it was very expensive and could only hold about 20 minutes of video. 

Thus, Sony reworked this technology and created the Betamax system in 1975, which became a successful VHS. It could record 60 minutes of video. JVC released a VHS, year after Betamax was released which could hold a 2 hours long video. And since then the number of hours kept recording.

 VHS also had some problems like jamming of the magnetic tape, low quality of the longer videos, etc. But still, it was a great invention considering the accessibility available in those times. 

What is the difference between VHS and VCR?

VCR can record onto any video cassette, while a “VHS player” is capable of playing VHS cassettes. It doesn’t specify whether or not the device can record or just playback. In the vast majority of cases that you will come across, they are almost the same.
