What does YRC mean?

YRC refers to Yellow Road Corporation. It is a subsidiary of the renowned transportation company, Yellow Corporation. It is an American company with its headquarters situated in Overland Park, Kansas.

YRC Freight is a national less than truckload subsidiary of the Yellow Corporation. Other subsidiaries of the Yellow Corporation include regional less than truckload carriers New Penn, Reddaway and Holland.

History of YRC

It all started when Grover Cleve Harrell in 1906 started a horse and taxi service called Yellow Cab Company in Oklahoma City. His elder brother A.J Harrell joined him in his operation of the business. 

Due to the discovery of oil in the city, the requirement for mules increased substantially. Thus, in 1929, they set up the Yellow Transit Freight Lines for solving the problem of manufacturers of slow transportation. Soon, the partnership of the brothers dissolved and AJ took control of the freight lines.

The name was again changed to Yellow Freight System Inc. in 1968 and then to Yellow Corporation in 1992. In 2003, it acquired the Roadway Corp. and a new holding company Yellow Roadway Corporation was established at Overland Park as a parent company.

The company rose to newer heights with more acquisitions with associated profit amounting to $288 million in 2005. The company received foreign investments and as a result, changed its name to YRC Worldwide in 2006.

Soon the company started getting losses and in 2011, it sold a significant portion of the Glenn Moore and started doing business under the YRC Freight moniker from 2012. The US Treasury offered an emergency help of $700 million to YRC Worldwide on July 1, 2020, in return for which the taxpayers would get 29.6 percent of the equity of the company.
