What does MCGM mean?

MCGM is the abbreviation for Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai. Commonly known as BMC or Brihan-Mumbai Municipal Corporation, it is a civic body responsible for the infrastructural and administrative development in Mumbai. It is the richest municipal corporation across India with budget crossing budgets of some smaller states.

The Municipal Corporation was established in 1988 under the Bombay Municipal Corporation Act. The civic body is headed by an IAS officer serving as the Municipal Commissioner. Regular elections are held to elect the representatives.

The winning political party then chooses the head of the house called the Mayor. The corporation’s elections are contested on 227 seats. Currently, Shiv Sena along with some alliances form the ruling party, whereas BJP forms the prime opposition.

I.S Chahal is the current municipal commissioner while Kishori Pednekar is the mayor. The last elections for MCGM were held in 2017 and the next is expected in 2022.
